What Is Asbergers Syndrome?

Asbergers syndrome falls in the Autism Spectrum Disorder as it has some of the same characteristics that autistic people have.  It is a brain developmental disorder which affects social interaction as well as some areas of communication.  Asbergers symptoms are not as severe as those with Autism.

Children with this disorder will show a lack of non verbal communication and will have difficulty communicating with peers of the same age.  They will have limited or even no empathy for others and will find it very difficult if not impossible to view life from another persons perspective.  Many Asperger children will be uncoordinated and appear to be quite clumsy.

People with Aspergers are often quite intelligent and many will exceed in whatever field they choose in life.  They will often show an interest in one or two topics and will become extremely knowledgable in those topics.

Although advanced academically, many Aspergers children may be delayed emotionally and will often have trouble in controlling or expressing their emotions.

There is not one symptom that can describe Aspergers but rather there is a number of symptoms that a person will display to be diagnosed with Aspergers.  Symptoms will also vary from person to person both in which symptoms are apparent as well as the severity of symptoms.

Because Aspergers lack empathy they can often find it hard to ‘fit in’ with other children of their own age.  They may sometimes be viewed as selfish as they only see the world from their own view.  It is difficult for an Asbergers child to understand the position of others and therefore wants things to happen their way and they can become quite upset if things aren’t done their way.

Asperger people will lack in non verbal communications and will often avoid eye contact.  They may not use much body language or facial expression and they will also find these hard to recognise in others.  They often take things very literally and as a result can be offended by something that is meant as a joke.

People will this disorder will often have repetitive behaviors and like routines and can get quite upset or even angry if their routine is changed.  Along with repetitive behavior, they may also display obsessive behaviors, both of these are quite common with people in the Autism Spectrum.

Unlike full blown Autism, most people with Aspergers will still develop language and cognitive skills without delay,  So although there are similarities with Asbergers and Autism, the symptoms are much less severe and those with Aspergers can live a reasonably normal life.
